CREATION OF MULTIMEDIA EXTENDED MATCHING ITEM MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS FOR THE PREPARATION OF AN UNDERGRADUATE ASSESSMENT IN CLINICAL MEDICINE

David McHaffie
Wellington School of Medicine, Wellington Hospital, New Zealand

Abstract:

This workshop will focus upon the use of computers for administering extended matching item multiple choice questions (EMIMCQ) and will introduce participants to the construction and display of questions using Authorware, a multi-media authoring tool. Members of the workshop will be sent background material about the construction and use of ìpaper-and-pencilî EMIMCQs. The content and format of these questions will be used as a guide to the construction of a computer-based examination. Participants wishing to collaborate in the construction of the computer exam will be asked to bring appropriate script, graphics, photographs, video, cineangiograms and clinical sound recordings in a digital format so that they can be incorporated into the test. The goals of the workshop will be, 1) to construct a set of questions that could be used as the basis for a multi-disciplinary, multi-media examination and 2) to enable discussion of possible standard formats for future development of these questions.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Tutors who wish to learn how to prepare multiple choice questions using Authorware will be able to assemble their own questions. A small number of participants, will develop a series of EMIMCQs and bring text and illustrations to the workshop. There we will work together to develop an examination that makes optimal use of clinical illustrations including video, cineangiograms and sound recordings.
