MedApps: An End-User Driven Medical Education System (Including MedFiler, MedLogbook, and MedSurvey)

Daniel Rosenthal, medical student

University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, FL

Abstract:

The MedApps are a suite of medical intranet applications written to empower the end-user, thereby improving the productivity and efficiency of creating and accessing online information. By using a password-protected webserver, all users at the USF College of Medicine have instant access to these applications. By developing different authoring mechanisms, even the entry-level user can utilize these programs without the headache, fear, and time commitment of traditional web development tools. This module of online publishing, user authentication, and information dissemination is represented in three specific applications: MedFiler (a medical curricular database managing system), MedLogbook (a medical clerkship patient database), and MedSurvey (a complete online college-wide survey/questionnaire system).

Benefit in Attending Session:

The MedApps are a series of online applications intended to assist in bringing faculty and student online easily. If you are trying to overcome some of the cultural fear of going online, the MedApps can assist.

1) MedFiler is useful for integrating an entire online curriculum of disparate authorware (PowerPoint, Word, Internet sites, WebCT courses, etc.) in a single searchable database.

2) MedLogbook is useful for the tracking and quantitative analysis of medical clerkship experiences.

3) MedSurvey is useful for course, faculty, and peer evaluations.
