Jefflines: Graphical Resources for Online Course Development Tom Sommerville Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA
Abstract:
Private internet access remains the deciding factor determining the form of instructional content on the internet. Vector-based drawing and animation applications, which create files much smaller than the more
prevalent *.gif and *.jpg "bit maps", have greatly augmented the range and quality of an under-utilized resource. It goes without saying that these solutions present challenges as well: servers need configuring, plug-ins need to be installed or older browsers need updating; also, older processors, or desktops without video and FPU support will render slowly.
This presentation will generally explain how these programs work, list some of the more widely used applications, point out some issues with implementation, and show examples currently or recently on Jeffline. We will show how we are addressing the conflicting requirements of minimal file size, and the need for clear, engaging graphics in online courses.
Benefit in Attending Session:
Attendees will learn about vector based programs and some technical issues surrounding them. We will be encourage to use graphics, charts, and maps as well as illustrations for these courses. We will demonstrate that animation is a powerful adjunct in presenting visual content. We will show that vector-based files make inclusion of graphics for courseware both practical and economical.
