Elizabeth A. Style Carnegie Mellon University
Abstract:
The Issue of Abortion in America: an exploration of a social controversy on CD-ROM is an interactive multimedia CD-ROM which provides (1) an opportunity to hear women and couples speak, in their own voices, of the emotional struggles and moral dilemmas they faced in their consideration of continuing or terminating a pregnancy and (2) a base of information which places the issue of abortion in the larger social context. One goal of this program is to enable informed and reflective engagement with the divisive controversy over abortion in America.
The CD-ROM has a companion web-site which serves as an additional resource relating to the issues covered in the program. The site also provides a formative evaluation of the CD.How to use this CD to explore, in the clsaaroom and individual study, ethical problems confronting modern medicine in ways that come close to real-world decision-making will be demonstrated.
The disc to be demonstrated is part of the award-winning Project THEORIA series from Carnegie Mellon's Center for the Advancement of Applied Ethics and can serve as a paradigm example of the use of technology in the teaching of medical ethics.
Benefit in Attending Session:
This CD-ROM and its companion web site model an approach to teaching reflective thought in the context of emotionally charged social controversies.
