Abstract:

The Web format is well suited for teaching and learning visually oriented discipline, and Pathology falls into this category. We, at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, developed a Web page in 1996 as a self-directed learning environment for medical students in our Pathology 200 course. Since its inception, we have experimented with various formats to incorporate different aspects of the pathology course. The advent of JavaScript and FileMaker Pro (FMP) Web based interface has enabled the development of sophisticated courseware that involves data storage and retrieval, user intervention, and logical feedback, nonetheless still retaining high levels of user friendliness.

We demonstrate two recently developed courseware formats that should also find applications in disciplines other than medicine:

  1. 1. A neuropathology image review module: the data base is created in FMP. Using a FMP Web based interface, the student may perform search on the Internet by image title, image annotation, or by keywords to retrieve groups of topic specific images for review.
  2.
  3. 2. A tutorial on blood smear evaluation with a "virtual" microscope: the student may examine low power blood smear slides on the Web and perform cell count directly with the computer keyboard. To learn to identify cell types, the student may click on specific cells to display high-power images with annotation in a pop-up window.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Participants will learn from this presentation:

  1. 1. The ease of creating data base using FMP and the convenience of viewing data/image on the Web.
  2. 2. Students may learn the basics of cell counting in hematology without purchase of a microscope.
