Web-based Self-Directed Learning Modules in Neuropathology and in Hematopathology

Abstract:
The Web format is well suited for teaching and learning visually oriented discipline, and Pathology falls into this category. We, at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, developed a Web page in 1996 as a self-directed learning environment for medical students in our Pathology 200 course. Since its inception, we have experimented with various formats to incorporate different aspects of the pathology course. The advent of JavaScript and FileMaker Pro (FMP) Web based interface has enabled the development of sophisticated courseware that involves data storage and retrieval, user intervention, and logical feedback, nonetheless still retaining high levels of user friendliness.
We demonstrate two recently developed courseware formats that should also find applications in disciplines other than medicine:
