Platform Presentation:
EnviroDx: Web-based Learning Program on Environmental Related Diseases
Eddy Bresnitz, M.D., M.S. University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)
Abstract:
EnviroDx is a multimedia, case-focused, computer-based learning program on environmental related diseases. It is available on the Web for free use by faculty, medical students, and public health professionals. The organizing metaphor for EnviroDx is an exploratory "virtual clinic" affiliated with a busy medical school. The program user takes the part of a practicing physician faced with a patient with an unknown disease that is possibly caused by exposure to environmental factors. In each problem, the physician has the opportunity to interview and examine the patient. The interview uses "Real Video" technology to add realism to the case.
EnviroDx has been field tested with medical students and public health professionals for the last two years. Currently, two cases are available on the Web, with two more to come before completion of the project. Issues to be discussed during the presentation include: developing the program with a multi-disciplinary team of content specialists, instructional designers, and technical specialists located in different geographical parts of the country; cost-effective development of media elements; use of the program in a medical school setting; beta testing, student feedback and faculty evaluation of the program.
Benefit in Attending Session:
Participants will see an example of a successful multimedia, Web-based, case-based learning tool that was developed to address specific issues in the medical school curriculum. Participants will learn about issues related to development, implementation, and evaluation of this type of learning program.
