Abstract:

better_health @ here.now is a 2-year project of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to envision the ways that medical schools and teaching hospitals can best use information technology, in biomedical research, in education and in health care activities, to improve the health of people and communities.

GOALS: The project has several goals and subgoals. They include:

1. Envision the networked infrastructure of computers, software tools, information resources, policies and expertise that will improve the ability of medical schools and teaching hospitals to achieve their mission goals in scientific discovery, medical education, health care and community service;

• Describe the features of a useful, usable, persistent, authoritative source of health information on the Internet;

• Identify the information policy issues that must be addressed at state, regional and national level to assure that the vision can be achieved;

• Showcase information technology applications in biomedical research, medical education & health care that show the greatest promise for helping medical schools and teaching hospitals achieve their mission goals;

2. Provide a blueprint that can guide medical schools and teaching hospitals in the development and integration of appropriate information infrastructure (networks, computers, software, content, policies, expertise) over the next decade.

• Document successful strategies for organizing and funding information infrastructure in medical schools and teaching hospitals;

• Sketch the role of medical informatics research in creating and shaping this environment.

This interactive break-out session seeks to gather ideas, opinions and preferences from educators involved in developing and using computer-based instructional materials. The session will begin with a brief overview of the goals of the better_health @ here.now project. Then, the moderator will post three questions related to the project goals. Audience responses to each question will be captured, and participants will be asked to rank the responses. The discussion questions are:

• What aspect of information technology would, if universally deployed/adopted, do the most to improve health sciences education?

• What is the next 'killer ap' for medical education - what new tool or resource or capability would make the most difference to you as an educator?

• What is the greatest barrier to using information technology in medical education today?

Benefit in Attending Session:

Participants in this session will have an opportunity to voice their unique views, as technology-savvy medical educators, in a way that will directly affect AAMC's project, and to set priorities that can guide infrastructure development in medical schools and teaching hospitals nationally. Participants will be invited to continue their participation in the project as an online focus group.
