Effective Distance Learning Teams

Anthony J. Frisby, Ph.D.
Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA

Abstract:

Distance Learning is one of the hottest buzzwords on campuses around the country. Universities are looking at ways to expand their boundaries and reach out to potential customers they never considered before. Part of this is due to changes in the economy; both college enrollments and public funding are dropping. But how do faculty develop distance learning teaching skills? How are programs developed that actually take advantage of new technologies without reducing the quality of instruction accredited universities require?

This presentation will explain the model Thomas Jefferson University developed to create distance learning courses. A team approach addressed the project from diverse perspectives: faculty, instructional design, technology, library resources, and quality assurance. The roles each perspective contributed will be discussed, and the final product, a graduate level epidemiology course, will be presented.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Those attending will find out how one university addressed the issue of providing distance learning. The design process, team roles, and final course product will be presented.
