Medical Palmtop Computing
Jeffrey M. Gilfor, M.D. Jefferson Health System, Philadelphia, PA
Abstract:
For years, portable and handhels computers and organizers have been used by medical professionals. Since their introduction in 1995, PalmOSô compatibles have become the leading handheld computers on the market. Their size, weight, expandability and use of Graffitiô input, have made them favorites among medical professionals and students. The healthcare community has embraced Palmô handhelds as tools for maintaining schedules, contacts, and medical data.
Many companies currently produce software and hardware add-ons for PalmOS connected palmtops. Many more are joining their ranks daily. Many of these products are ideal for use in the hospital, clinic, office, or lab. Some of them are specifically designed with the medical professional in mind.
Several new technology advances; in addition to alliances bewtween Palm Computing and computing inovators like Sun Microsystems, Yahoo, Netscape, and Qualcom; move the palmtop computer closer to being the "virtual medical tool" that some of us have dreamed it can be.
