Abstract:

The transmission of information, ideas, and experiences is increasingly facilitated by the proliferation of computers capable of displaying combinations of text, graphics, video, and sound; broadband networks capable of delivering these multiple media to the home or office; and new models for using these technologies for education and training. Progress in the last category has lagged behind the rapid technological evolution driving our entry into the Information Age. However, some recently-developed models of education are particularly appropriate for technology-mediated professional education. This presentation describes a new model, "Virtual Practicums," drawing on the ideas of Donald Schˆn ("Educating the Reflective Practitioner"), that is likely to be widely useful for education and training of health professionals. Benefit in Attending Session:

The virtual practicum model is generally useful and applicable to a variety of professional topics, particularly those pertaining to clinical work. It is hoped that the virtual practicum model can be applied by other educators in the health professions. Attendees will be invited to consider forming a consortium of developers who might be interested in sharing expertise and resources to develop a series of programs using this model. This will be discussed in detail in a separate, breakout session.
