Breakout Session
Delivering Layered Images over the Web
Discussants: Harold Lehmann, Sharon Dennis, Parvati Dev, William Lober Johns Hopkins, University of Utah, Stanford University, Univeristy of Washington
Summary:
Ever since the days of videodisc and HyperCard, layered, labeled images have been a mainstay of presenting teaching images to medical students and others. While the Web is overwhelming these earlier methods of providing computer-based education, there is currently no standard method for delivering this crucial piece of educational material.
In this panel, we shall discuss currently available technologies for satisfying this educational need, including image mapping, javascript, static gifs, and java-based applets yoked to proprietary image formats. We shall also discuss upcoming attempts at bridging these alternatives, to broaden the availability of all the images being created. Our hope is that the panel and audience discussion will define the specifications for that interchange format.
Benefit in Attending Session:
Attendees will gain insight into the technical, detailed challenges in providing this core educational modality. They will have a voice in defining an image interchange standard, if such developes from this panel. Attendees will also learn about the availability of such images for their own teaching.
