Presentation Type:

Breakout Session

Multimedia Delivery in a Broadband Environment

Facilitator:

Mark Noel
Interactive Media Laboratory, Dartmouth Medical School

Summary:

All our efforts at distance education and asynchronous learning rely heavily on the technological infrastructure capable of delivering these multimedia services. While long range prediction of technological development is virtually impossible, there are many high-bandwidth technologies in devlopment today (such as those being incorporated into the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative) that we can realistically expect to see deployed in one form or another within the next few years.

This session will first offer a brief review of some of these new technologies and their near-term potential. We will then discuss technical issues of developing multimedia software for delivery in a broadband environment similar to that which we expect to see in the near future.

Topics will include
- Video / audio compression technologies
- Methods of media delivery
- Schemes for reducing latency in streaming media
- "Smart" caching schemes
- Creating a seamless (and fast) user experience
- Methods for dynamic content inclusion and updating

Benefit in Attending Session:

The primary goal of this session is to share some of our experience in delivering educational multimedia over high bandwidth networks and to expose the participants to some of the possibilities that may open up within the next few years.
