Who Should Attend: If you have been thinking about taking the plunge with information management software, use this workshop to see and compare packages, and explore what they can do for you.
Synopsis: The use of bibliographic citation management software, such as Reference Manager, EndNote, or Papyrus, can save a busy health professional hours worth of word processing and research time. Such software can collect and categorize database search results automatically, integrate citations into your article as you write it, and format the article and its citations for submission to a wide range of publishers. Research groups can share central data files for more effective collaboration. New features also allow you to post bibliographic information to the Web in dynamic, searchable files. Creative collaboration is based on shared information.
This workshop will:
1) Discuss environments in which bibliographic management sofware is most useful.
2) Provide hands-on data management experience with Reference Manager, a leading product designed especially for health professionals and scientists.
3) Practice writing an article with integrated citations.
4) Demonstrate web-posting capabilities and sample databases created at Thomas Jefferson University by the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research and the Center for Medical Education Research and Policy.
5) Provide sample software for attendees to take home.
6) Provide instructional booklet and tips for evaluating citation management software before purchase.
Benefit in Attending Session:
Attendees will learn to evaluate their own information management needs. They will be given the tools to make choices among commercial software packages that may fill those needs. Attendees will practice enough with one package to begin practicing bibliographic management in their daily work, and will be exposed to advanced features which may help them to collaborate in creative new ways.
