Presentation Title:

Using Flash for Interactive Animation (HyperBrain)

Abstract:

This demonstration focuses on the update of Hyperbrain, originally done in Hypercard, to a web version with as much interactivity, while making it more accessible via the web. Flash is a vector-based animation application by Macromedia, originally developed to deliver high quality animation over the web. Online quizzes and tutorials have been built in Flash. Users can Zoom in on objects in a Flash animation, with NO loss of quality, no ugly pixels, allowing for fine detail in animations meant for education and learning. Rollovers, buttons, pop-up menus can all be done efficiently in Flash, allowing the developer to create environments that are truly conducive to learning and self-evaluation. The vector-based format of Flash provides these diverse features at small file sizes. However, Flash does have a steep learning curve. Using HyperBrain as a starting point, we will demonstrate different ways of providing meaningful content through animation. Some basic concepts of animation in Flash, such as the timeline, symbols, tweening objects and shapes, buttons, and interactivity will be demonstrated. The demo will also serve as introduction to what Flash can, and cannot do. Those with content they wish to convert to an animated or interactive form should consider Flash.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Demonstrates interactive animation with Flash, a useful tool in student education. Will introduce participants to the unique qualities of Flash (vector-based image editing and animation on the web, high-resolution display and printing with small file size)
