Abstract:
Standardized patients (SPs) have been use extensively and
successfully to evaluate clinical examination skills in medical school. Unfortunately, this method is used primarily
for the evaluation of adult clinical problems.
The assessment of pediatric clinical skills using this method is fraught
with ethical and reliability issues that limit the use of young children in SP
scenarios. We have developed a novel
hybrid web-based/SP case that allows the student to complete the physical
examination (PE) on the computer but interact with an adult as a SP parent.
Data concerning student PE recognition skills are obtained during the case and
entered into a database. We have piloted the case with University of Colorado
third year medical students during the 1998-99 academic year and plan to
administer another case in 1999-00.
This addresses a significant need to evaluate pediatric clinical
competency and may have broad application to other educators.
Benefit in Attending
Session:
This addresses a novel approach to clinical evaluation that incorporates technology to overcome current limitations. We believe using technology in this manner adds to the evaluation process and yet keeps the human quality by the presence of the standardized patient. There are many questions about how this combination effects student performance. We will be showing the cases and discuss our experience with participates.
