Teaching and Learning Minor Oral Surgery : A Multimedia Approach
University of Aarhus, Denmark + Primal Medical
Information, UK
Abstract:
Safe oral surgery demands a detailed knowledge of surgical
technique, underpinned by a sound grasp of anatomy. Dental surgeons and dental
nurses need technical information about procedures, while patients need clear
information before and after surgery.
This comprehensive multimedia program is suitable for
undergraduates and postgraduates. It is being developed by Jan Hejle and Jens
Koelsen Petersen from Denmark with Primal Medical Information (Roger Kneebone
and David ApSimon from England). This team consists of a dental anatomist, a
dental surgeon, a surgical educator and a multimedia systems engineer.
The structured, web-based program is highly visual. It
integrates animated graphics, operative video and time-lapse photographic
sequences of operations, together with anatomical demonstrations on human sections.
Brief text emphasizes key points.
The innovative educational framework suits it for group
teaching and self-directed learning. It builds on a recognised dental
curriculum and skills matrix and uses well-researched, unbiased material
presented in a flexible yet easily accessible form.
Benefit in Attending Session:
This presentation demonstrates an integrated approach to
teaching. It combines the perspectives of anatomy, surgery, multimedia and
pedagogy. This will be an opportunity to examine technical and educational
aspects of an evolving project and discuss how its multidisciplinary strands
are being woven together.
