Abstract:
An economical source of high-quality illustrations for undergraduate and secondary school courses in brain study, long needed, is now possible. Accordingly, we have prepared the first in what we intend to be a series of neuroanatomical atlases, accessible world-wide on line, at http://www.brains.radiology.msu.edu. .At this time, actual specimens of brains of domestic sheep are a readily accessible and useful resource for the neural teaching laboratory, so we have produced a neuroanatomically detailed set of labeled images showing a great many of the nuclei and tracts of these brains. We use the superbly stained specimens in the combined collections of the University of Wisconsin, Michigan State University, and the National Museum of Health and Medicine. Over 100 stained sections, in alternating stains for fibers and for cell bodies, are presented, viewable with and without labels. These are freely downloadable for use in preparing classroom and homework materials. Supported by NSF grants IBN 9812712, 98149
Benefit in Attending
Session:
This particular addition to our Website offerings was requested by
several participants at last year's SOL/CHES meeting. The suggestions of
participants who explore what we have produced will again be of great
assistance in our ability to meet their needs. We offer many suggestions for
ways in which our atlas can enhance educational offerings.
