Abstract:

As part of a FIPSE grant, our team has developed a CD-ROM/web hybrid program that uses digital video cases to standardize the national pediatric curriculum. Using problem-based learning as the instructional method, cases serve as a stimulus for learning, followed by asynchronous case discussions between students at remote clinical sites. Cases are progressively disclosed with digital video of patient/physician encounters >from a CD-ROM. Links take students to a form in which they enter what they know about the case, their hypotheses, and their learning issues. These were designed in Cold Fusion to go directly into a database. Groups of 4-5 students and a faculty facilitator discuss the case, teaching each other within the discussion section. This blend of technologies requires students to work through the case both individually and collaboratively.

We will work through one of our new cases with the audience to demonstrate how the program works and demonstrate some of the newer elements we are incorporating. We will discuss some of the lessons we have learned about our students and the technology.

While collaboration takes place in LIVE, the program also forces students to make individual commitments. Based on the early evidence, we believe deep learning does occur. Video is closer to the way practitioners gather patient information and programs such as LIVE may help students develop necessary clinical reasoning and communication skills.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Participants will have a chance to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of working with video cases and how it impacts student learning. We will also share the benefits and problems surrounding the creation of a virtual problem-based learning environment.
