Abstract:

Images of histology of tissues and organs were captured as projection slides from microscope slide collection used in our teaching laboratory. These images as well as electron micrographs and diagrams were scanned and saved in graphic format using Nikon 35mm film scanner LS-1000.  The images were presented as power point presentations with labels.  A narrative file

was added to each image.   User can click the sound icon and hear the explanation of the salient features of the image and related concept of the histology subject matter under discussion.  Each section of histology subject is organized as a written syllabus and a power point presentation

for the laboratory material.  The power point presentations and written syllabi were made available to students electronically through medical school web server.  Students can view it on line or download it to their own computer.  The power point presentations were used as pre-laboratory introduction to the laboratory sessions as well as post laboratory reviews.

They were also used in the laboratory as a self-study guide.  In the portion of histology curriculum where these presentations were used, students found them very effective learning tools.  Coupled with the written syllabus, which summarizes the morphological and functional features of the topic in discussion, students found these power point presentations very efficient ways for reviews for exams.  Some even found it sufficient for complete self-study when they missed attending lecture

and/or laboratory session.   Under development is inclusion of some animation in the syllabi for explanations of difficult to understand concepts and self-assessment of the knowledge in histology.  This project uses relatively simple equipment to prepare electronic course material to

enhance and facilitate students' learning and reviewing of histology.

Benefit in attending session:

This presentation offers an inexpensive way of incorporating histology material for computer assisted learning of histology. It affords students an efficient and convenient way of learning and reviewing histology material.
