Abstract:
Case in Point (CiP) is a research
project that aims to develop state-of-the-art educational software for
psychiatric nursing students. We are particularly interested in addressing
problems encountered when students make the transition from the classroom to
the clinic. Our research aims to identify these problems and create an
interactive multimedia environment where students can use knowledge learned in
the classroom and practice their clinical skills.
Phase One of this project involves creating a "virtual client" so that students may practice their interviewing and problem solving skills. To develop quality educational materials we are conducting a task analysis of the nurse/client interview process, and conducting a nationwide survey of nurse educators to define the common problems. Program design will follow an iterative design model that includes clinical, content and curriculum experts working together with technologists and the target population.
This innovative program will integrate
methodologies from the fields of instructional technology, cognitive science,
and artificial intelligence to create a learning environment that will allow
students to solve problems in a clinic-like environment. The interview task analysis and how this
information is combined with pedagogy and technology will be presented.
CiP is funded by the National Library of
Medicine, through the SBIR program, grant number LR43LM 06777-01 awarded to
Smilex Inc.
Benefit in Attending
Session:
Participants will learn how we conducted a task analysis of the interview between a psychiatric nurse and a patient with manic-phase bipolar disorder. This task analysis was the basis for defining and organizing the knowledge space used to develop interactive software that allows the student nurse to interview a virtual patient.
