Abstract:

Faculty members who teach in the medical curriculum rely increasingly on digital media, such as digital images, video, and 3-D models.  Building a collection of digital multimedia, however, is not a straightforward process.  First, finding or creating high-quality images can be a time-consuming task.  And secondly, organizing and keeping track of one’s digital teaching materials requires specialized software.

This demonstration will show a beta-version of an online multimedia database designed to help faculty with cataloguing images, sounds and video.  This web-based database technology provides a number of advantages:

The database structure was developed in collaboration with a large number of medical colleges across the United States and Knowledge Weavers, a national resource for medical multimedia at the University of Utah. A consensus on database fields was achieved. This could greatly facilitate

the exchange of teaching assets among organizations.

Benefit in Attending Session:

Slice of Life participants can "test drive" the online multimedia database. Advantages of online multimedia database technology will be clarified.
