Automated Indexing of Digital Video Lectures Using Off-the-shelf Components

Abstract:
Many medical schools have begun using digital video
capture of lectures as a supplemental component of their student learning
resources. The utility of the video lecture is enhanced by hyperlinks into the
video stream, indexed in some manner to the actual content of the lecture.
However, with existing processes, generation of the index points is either a
time consuming manual process, or is automated by fabrication of custom
electronic equipment and is therefore not
easily exported to other institutions.
We have identified a set of reasonably priced commercial
hardware and software components that automate the generation of time points,
indexed to the presentation of visual markers at arbitrary times during the
lecture (e.g., the slides, overheads or other visual aids). Using this system,
plus template Web pages, it is possible to place an indexed digital video on
the Web within 30 minutes of the live presentation. This system permits
flexible viewing of lecture material
by students, by faculty interested in self-improvement and administrators
interested in tracking the distribution of curriculum content.
We will outline our process and present
the analysis of usage data that are collected as an aid to understanding the
impact of these technologies on the learning strategies of students.
Benefit in Attending
Session:
Many Medical Schools are beginning to
use digital video over the internet to suppliment learning. Putting all the
pieces together for fully indexed video lectures can be a daunting task. We
will present our solution to the problem plus show data on how the students use
the resource.
