Abstract:
Procedural Skills lend themselves to multimedia teaching. Video demonstrations are particularly helpful for learning proper technique: they can show the individual steps in the process, can demonstrate alternate techniques, and can show how the equipment works.
We will describe our experience in creating four multimedia CDs for teaching procedural skills. We will discuss the development of a javascript shell for presentation and organization of multimedia content as well as Quicktime videos and the accommodations needed to adapt to this video format. Results of this trial indicate that having the multimedia teaching CD available results in residents doing increased numbers of procedures during their training.
Benefit in Attending
Session:
Participants will learn the ways that multimedia presentations are particularly suited to teaching procedural skills, how the different features of QuickTime movies are used to record and present procedural techniques. We will discuss lessons learned in producing CD is about procedures and effect of the CDs on resident training and continuing medical education.
