ABSTRACT:

The delivery of online learning materials creates new demands for student support. Virtual learning environments attempt to address this issue by combining communications systems with web-based content delivery. This presentation will describe five years experience in developing, deploying and using such an environment at the University of Leeds. The environment is in continuous development in response to demands by both teachers and students. This has allowed us to experiment with new forms of learning. We have had successes and pitfalls, but in the main our experience has been positive. This is a rapidly-developing field and new legislation in the UK enforcing accessibility is having a major impact on the design of learning environments. Another driver in the UK is the development of the eUniversity which is forcing the issue of interoperability of learning systems to the top of the agenda.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

This session will be of benefit to those considering the acquisition and use of a virtual learning environment. It will inform participants of new developments and provide information on new learning methods arising out the use of such environments.
