ABSTRACT:

Educational institutions must use a variety of course delivery methods to provide greater access to higher education for its students. Alternative methods of education, other than the traditional classroom, are becoming more in demand. A variety of distributed learning methods, including college credit courses offered via the internet, are outcomes of increased technological advances in communication. Greater numbers of students, particularly registered nurses seeking BSN completion programs, desire flexibility in educational pursuits. In addition, regular and proficient use of computers, the Internet, and electronic communication systems are competencies that are becoming required of nurses and other healthcare professionals. This poster will describe the evolution and establishment in 1998 of a web-based curriculum leading to the baccalaureate degree in nursing at the University of Central Florida School of Nursing. A three year status report, including demographic data of graduates, is included. The components of institutional support and the UCF faculty development model will be presented. Of critical importance is faculty cohesion, consistency, and quality assurance measures.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

While individual courses presented via the internet are common, there are a limited number of degree programs available. Participants considering developing such a program will have an opportunity to discuss strategies to promote program and student success.
