"Growth and Growth Disorders": An Interactive Learning Tool for Paediatrics

Emely J. Spierenburg and Mathijs Doets
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Erasmus University Rotterdam

ABSTRACT:

This program covers the most common growth disorders in children: both retardation and extreme growth. The purpose of the program is to improve the skills of students to recognise, differentiate and diagnose the above. The program is not a replacement of existing textbooks, but an important addition. The program contains many photographs, graphics, and videos. The program consists of three parts:

1. Theory

This part gives a theoretical overview of normal growth, regulation of growth, methods to measure growth as well as methods to determine growth disorders. The major types of growth disorders are described in short with additional pictures.

2. Case-studies

In this part, forty-five of the most common growth disorders are reviewed along the following elements: clinical symptoms, growth curve, laboratory evaluations, (differential) diagnosis, therapy and prognosis. Many photographs are used to show the clinical symptoms belonging to each disorder.

3. Assessment

This part offers the student thirty-six tests. In each test the student needs to determine an unknown disorder through patient-descriptions and photographs. Also various types of questions are used in the test section, like open, multiple choice, and pointing and drag-and-drop questions. After answering a question the student obtains feedback. At the end of a test a score is shown.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

'Growth and growth disorders' is a multimedia educational tool, which gives an overview of the most common growth disorders in children. The purpose of the program is to teach students to recognise, differentiate and diagnose disorders in children. Besides extensive theory, there are 45 case studies in which the student has to make specific decisions. The program also provides 36 tests by which the learned topics can be practised by the student.
