The Use of a CD-ROM to Teach/Learn Obstetrical Skills

ABSTRACT:
Prior to the introduction of a new problem oriented curriculum the teaching of skills to medical students at our institution has been somewhat haphazard. Students enjoy and are comfortable with demonstrations but have to rely on textbooks for revision. CD-ROMS were developed to overcome this problem as well as to
- standardise the teaching of clinical skills
- add value to the teaching of the subject and
- manage small group teaching to large classes of students
The CD-ROM to be demonstrated is on obstetrical skills. The text is illustrated by means of graphics, video clips and additional relevant information that appears in pop-up boxes. A problem oriented approach to the curriculum has been adopted as far as possible.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Participants will have a chance to view a multimedia teaching/learning programme on the obstetric skills expected of a generalist practitioner. Innovative ideas on how to improve on the implementation of a problem oriented approach should emerge from the discussions.
