ABSTRACT:
It's time to start migrating your static Website to one that's database-driven, but where to start? These five simple web applications are an easy way to add utility to your site and begin "tooling up" for the future. Using the free version of Allaire ColdFusion (Express 4.5) and Microsoft Access you can readily add these dynamic pages that can be accessed and easily managed from any web browser:
1) Recent Additions
A log of significant additions or updates to your site. Let folks know what you've been up to and where they can find it.
2) Online Course Evaluations
Handle your student course evaluations online. Since all of the data is directly entered into Access, summarizing reports can be easily generated. In this version, student ID's are stripped from the evaluation to maintain anonymity, and stored in a separate table to ensure compliance for extra credit, etc.
3) Microbiology Case Bank
A simple case bank using images and text. Instructors can easily add or edit new cases from their web browser.
4) Student Calendars
If you build your course calendars using Microsoft Exchange and Outlook, why not export them to an Access database and display them online? A few simple queries offer students the ability to search by keyword or date.
5) Home Page News
Let administration post special announcements to your home page from their web browser. Very empowering!
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
An introduction to generating dynamic, database-driven pages using free and/or readily available tools. Simple code and database examples will be available.
