Bridging the Pediatric Clerkship Gap

Anthony J. Frisby, PhD

Jefferson Medical College

ABSTRACT:

Jefferson Medical College has initiated a series of instructional CD-ROM programs designed to help prepare students as they begin the different clerkships. The first released module is for the pediatric clerkship and designed to prepare students for taking the infant history and performing the physical exam. Proper history taking skills are learned by first viewing novice examples, discussing what went wrong and could have been done better, then watching a more experienced demonstration. Physical exam skills are demonstrated through video and animations. Students plot growth charts, listen to breath and lung sounds and learn how to provide necessary parenting guidance.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

This session will include a presentation of the program, comments on feedback from faculty and students, discuss how the CD is being used to provide student development on the first day of the clerkship, and how it is being used in ways we hadn't initially planned
