ABSTRACT:
Medical Schools across the world are assessing the value of the Web in delivering an online curriculum. Of particular interest is whether authentic learning environments can be effectively delivered via the Web. The development of web based cases at the School of Medicine, UCLA has been at the forefront over the last one year. An outcome of these efforts has been the generation of complex, interactive simulated cases in Pediatric Genetics. Ten richly annotated , interactive cases containing images in various formats from real patients are included. Forty more cases will be added to the case bank. The utilization of database technologies was instrumental in individualizing the experience of learning with cases. Feedback structures are novel, using the power of the Web to implement social motivational strategies.
The following discussion points will frame the presentation:
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Participants will be able to: a) reflect upon the cognitive perspective taken in the design of these cases; b) view the level of interactivity, feedback structures and visualization techniques alone and in a combination; c) learn about the resources used to generate complex online cases; and d) share the code with appropriate credit.
