Pre-Workshop

"Docs 'n Drugs - The Virtual Hospital" : A Case Authoring Tool

Tim Pietzcker and Claudia Scheuerer
University Hospital, Ulm, Germany

ABSTRACT:

This tutorial intends to familiarize interested medical authors with the authoring system of "Docs 'n Drugs - the virtual hospital", a case-based learning system for the web.A teaching case is a complex entity consisting of several components such as factual data, didactic elements, multimedia elements, story line and layout options. This calls for a comprehensive authoring system that integrates an intuitive user interface with powerful tools to access the various components' databases.

In "Docs 'n Drugs", the authoring system consists of two major divisions:case knowledge acquisition (CKA) and storyboard editor (SE).The CKA is used to systematically record all the factual data of a case.Structured according to established medical hierarchies such as ICD-10,MeSH, ICPM etc., as well as custom-designed hierarchies, all cases are stored in an interchangeable format to allow for re-use of data indifferent cases. Furthermore, the CKA serves to specify the weighted relation of those data to the relevant differential diagnoses. These relations are used to feed the so-called "intelligent tutor", an AItool that assesses the student's progress throughout the case, generates situation-specific hints, and evaluates the differential diagnoses proposed by the student.

The SE is the platform the author uses to create a teaching path for thecase. The case may be presented to the learner in any degree of navigational freedom, ranging from a completely guided, linear pathway to nearly unlimited navigation options. In the SE the author decides about the story line, integrates the case data and multimedia elements of the CKA into the story and devises quizzes and other interactive items.

The tutorial will be held in German.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The pre-workshop tutorial will allow case authors (e.g., working in the CASEPORT project) to get an insight into the authoring tools needed to create their own cases for the "Docs 'n Drugs" system. Also, authors involved in other case-based teaching projects may benefit from the comparison of their system with "Docs 'n Drugs", evaluating and discussing the pros and cons of the various authoring environments.
