Sebastian Uijtdehaage, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles, CA, USA

ABSTRACT:

Recently, the Word Wide Web Consortium designed Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) to enable authoring of TV-like multimedia presentations such as training courses on the Web. The SMIL language is an easy-to-learn HTML-like language and can be written with a simple text editor. A SMIL presentation can consist of streaming audio, streaming video, images, text or any other media type.

In this hands-on workshop the participants will do a number of excercises that will lead to a SMIL presentation that synchronizes video with images.Furthermore, SMIL authoring tools and resources will be reviewed as well as the potential and limitations of SMIL. Finally, the features of the upcoming version (2.0) of SMIL will be discussed.Prerequisites: Participants are expected to be familiar with basic HTML syntax, digital image formats (gif, jpeg) and with the RealPlayer.

Maximum number of participants: 12

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Anyone who would like to enrich their educational websites with interactive, media-rich content would enjoy this workshop. After this workshop, participant will be able to get started with creating SMIL multimedia presentations. A binder with the exercise and resources will be handed out.
