Cutting the Cord: a combination of wireless networking and compulsory laptop purchase is changing the way students study in groups.

At the LSUHSC-S school of medicine students are required to buy identically configured laptop computers. In addition we have provided Ethernet access points throughout the library. However this did not encourage the students to bring their laptops to school as they were able to use the existing microcomputer lab to check assignments, mail etc. This year we introduced the purchase of a high-powered wireless-networking card along with the computer. Wireless access points were installed to cover the entire library area and the entire small group study rooms. We have seen the students drastically increase the rate at which they bring their laptops to school. In addition, we have noticed (albeit through empirical evidence) a remarkable change in student study behavior. With the advent of sit-anywhere access to their learning materials, student study has flourished in every wireless access location. So much so that students have requested expanded wireless Ethernet coverage.

We suggest therefore that the introduction of wireless networking has increased the utility of computers to the students and, in addition, has influenced their group learning habits.

With the decreasing price of wireless, Ethernet systems are becoming more common.

We have found that allowing the students wire-free networking has removed constraints from group learning. Students congregate around the school, wherever access is possible and study in groups using our online curricular material. Learn how to implement and maintain such a system.
