BREAKOUT SESSION
Effective Teaching Using an Empathy Enhancing wireless Feedback Technology - " mobiTED"
Harold Lyon, Florian Eitel, Mathais Beyer, Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, and University of Nürnberg , Germany
ABSTRACT:
Extensive research on effective teaching in 40 states and several countries has shown that the trait most prevalent among the most effective teachers is "empathy" or the teacher's ability to see the world and classroom from the students' perspective. The authors have developed and tested a wireless, user-friendly feedback system whereby students can be empowered to give instant feedback to teachers during the class session. The unique software developed by one of the authors (Dr. Beyer) also enables linking to Power Point slides for flexible and immediate evaluation of the students mastery of the teacher's main teaching points as well as various graphic options for displaying and presenting this data. During this breakout session, the authors will discuss effective teaching. The audience will have hand-held "mobiTED" wireless modules with which to communicate with the presenters as they describe the system. At the end of the session each person can evaluate how well the demonstration has permitted an understanding of the technology
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Physicians, dentists, nurses, and other health care practitioners spend 80% of their time teaching -- teaching colleagues, students, and patients to change their life-styles. Yet few of these professionals have ever been taught how to teach. Mostly they model their favorite teachers who may or may not have been good teachers. This session will present a new interactive technology which can help transform a passive lecture into an interactive session whereby students, empowered by the new wireless feedback technology, will be able to let the teacher know instantly what they are learning or not learning during the teaching. This technology has the potential to transform one-way teaching into exciting and challenging two-way interaction.
