ABSTRACT:

This CD-ROM contains information in French on human histology, theory and practice. It includes a preface, 16 sections, pages on specific tissues and an index. Each tissue (ex. epithelium, connective tissue, muscle etc.) or system (ex. digestive system etc.) has a theoretical and a practical page. A series of interactive tools have been incorporated into the CDROM to permit easy and informative navigation by the student.

JavaScript was used to set up interactive question and answer pages for each theoretical section. Macromedia Flash 5 was also used permitting other interactive approaches to studying histology. A "click and drag" tool was applied to histological figures allowing students to check recognition of microscopic structures. A "pop-up" tool was incorporated allowing students to explore unknown histological features in light micrographs. Using this tool the student moves the mouse cursor over images and structures are discovered by highlight, labeling and voice identification. Finally a "magnifying" tool was incorporated permitting students to examine histological structures at higher magnification as if using a microscope. Some of these tools have already been used and commented on by students. Results can be discussed during demonstration.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The interactive tools may have general applicability for image-based teaching. Student response has been very positive. The CDROM should be of particular interest to the francophone community.
