Teaching the Fundamentals of Physical Diagnostic Techniques on the Web

ABSTRACT:

Basic Clinical Skills is now available in the Integrated Medical Curriculum (IMC) interactive suite of medical school courseware, published by Gold Standard Multimedia. Authors Richard Rathe, MD, Andria Klioze, MD and Christopher Hurt built this program to be useful in an introductory basic clinical skills course for teaching and learning how to clinically evaluate an organ system or region. Specific chapters on pediatrics and vital signs are also covered.

Basic Clinical Skills includes hand-drawn illustrations, photographs, video, sound and content pages with links to glossary terms. The program unfolds in a progressive sequence including background, major skills and special tests. Users learn how to perform each skill with step-by-step instructions, and discover which tests to perform under special circumstances. "Jump out" pages with additional information help to place each skill in context, and clinical pearls of wisdom provide instruction on how to best interpret and use diagnostic findings. Narrated videos allow users to feel as if they are watching a private instructor demonstrate each skill.

In the classroom, the program authors divide their students into presentation teams and assign various topics to each team. Each team prepares a demo/presentation for the entire class using the Basic Clinical Skills courseware. Then they spend a few days preparing and practicing before they are observed and tutored by their instructors. During these sessions, students are "checked off" on each skill by their instructors using printable checklists from the Basic Clinical Skills program. Students are also videotaped working with history and physical exam cases, and the tapes are reviewed in a small group setting.
