Interactive Lab Companion for Introductory Anatomical Sciences for Undergraduate Art Students

Michael Wiley and Nicholas Woolridge, Divisions of Anatomy (MW) and Biomedical Communications (NW) Department of Surgery, University of Toronto

ABSTRACT:

Anatomy 300Y is an introductory anatomy course taught to students in the Arts and Science and Radiation Science programs at the University of Toronto. The Anatomy 300Y Interactive Lab Companion is an interactive, highly visual, CD-ROM, cross-platform program that outlines the laboratory component of the course. The program can stand-alone. However, it is meant to be used in conjunction with microscope slides and plastinated gross anatomical and neuroanatomical specimens. The program has permitted a shift in the approach to laboratory instruction in the course from demonstrator-driven labs to student-centred study. Using the Anatomy 300Y Interactive Laboratory Companion, students can now set the length and timing of their laboratory study and review, as it best suits their own schedules. The program has been in place since September 1999, and student reviews have been consistently very favorable.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The program offers an example of a highly interactive, CD-ROM based approach to support laboratory education in anatomy, histology and neuroanatomy for undergraduate students in Art and Sciences and the Allied Health professions.
