POSTER
CASEPORT - Case-Based Learning Through a System-Integrative Portal

ABSTRACT:
CASEPORT is a portal for case-based learning in medicine in the framework of the initiative "new media in education" of the German Ministry for Research and Education. It integrates four different well-established medical learning systems (CAMPUS, CASUS, D*-Trainer and Docs `n Drugs) with heterogeneous educational and technical concepts. The portal is an open source project. It is open for other systems to be integrated. The technical integration has successfully been completed after common metadata definition. A German XML standard core format for cases in medical education has been defined and will be presented. In consequence, the learners as well as faculty can log into all systems with a single sign-on, search for cases over all four distributed case databases and combine appropriate cases into courses. All cases will commonly be evaluated. Communication features for group discussions are build into the portal. This approach assembles a critical mass of different cases at the fingertips of students and teachers. About 40 clinical authors currently work on the completion of the existing case collections in internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, and neurology. This poster describes the technical aspects of the integrative portal approach, focussing on the openness for the integration of other case-based systems. Furthermore, the concepts of the case reviewing process and the successful cross-institutional integration of cases into courses will be described and discussed.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Participants will learn about the integration of heterogeneous training systems, thus making use of existing materials and enhancing its usefulness by conceptually combining different approaches.
