On-Line Problem Based Learning

C. Skinner and W. Hendelman
Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa

ABSTRACT:

The development of problem based learning using web based tools requires a revision of pedagogical techniques to incorporate imagery and other multimedia material to enhance the learning experience. This poster and web site demonstration will illustrate the issues encountered in the development of a specific case of syringomyelia used to teach spinal cord anatomy, clinical localization, and pathophysiological mechanisms. The core clinical problem has been enhanced with multimedia material. Generic learning resources have been developed which can be accessed during the course of the problem solving exercise. This approach has been used as the template for developing a PBL portal for undergraduate medical school teaching at the University of Ottawa.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Exposure to the issues of on-line PBL development. Exposure to the development of a PBL portal as a content delivery system. Exposure to the pedagogical issues of PBL development and evaluation. Exposure to security issues using a portal to deliver PBL content.
