Hands-on PCs. Limited to 20. All Day
Prerequisites: Participants must be familiar with the WWW and using a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
ABSTRACT:
This session will provide hands-on experience in setting up, managing and tutoring a class in a virtual learning environment. Using the freely available Bodington System, developed at the University of Leeds, participants will create online courses, assessments, and feedback questionnaires and devise online learning activities. They will set up access for groups of students and explore how the learning of online, probably remote students can be supported in this environment.
This session will be divided into to two parts. In the first part, the participants will use the freely-available Bodington System to create learning resources and build these into on-line learning activities. They will set up groups of students and learn how to give the students appropriate access to the learning resources they need. In the second part, the participants will take the roles of online tutors who will manage an online-course in which the students are working collaboratively in groups. The participants will be presented with realistic situations and problems which they will need to resolve in order to successfully tutor and manage the online class. In the process we will explore many of the issues that confront both tutors and students working in online environments.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
This session will be useful to participants who are considering using a virtual learning environment to deliver and support online courses. There will be a particular emphasis on organising online activities, rather than simply delivering WWW-based content.
