PRE-WORKSHOP
Streaming Digital Video for the Web
Paul E. Burrows and Eric Carlson, KUED Media Solutions, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
Lecture/demo. Half Day. Some "Techie Talk", Limited to 25
ABSTRACT:
There are high expectations for delivering digital video over the Internet. Today, the media players not only play back video & audio, but also integrate hyperlinks and interactivity within the video stream. The presenters take a step back and provide liberal background information about the many specifications and settings which lead to well-presented digital video on the web. These specifications include: (1) Internet pipeline data rates; (2) Media architectures; (3) Meaning of streaming; (4) Video formats; (5) Effect of quality of source materials; (6) Effect of screen activity; (7) Codecs; (8) Movie data rates; (9) Video frame rates; (10) Video frame size; (11) Audio sample rates; (12) Audio sample size; and (13) File sizes & storage requirements. The lecture/demo is richly illustrated with many samples comparing good and bad movies. The three major architectures are discussed: QuickTime, RealMedia, & Windows Media. The methods for embedding digital video files into web pages are also presented. Setting up video servers, unfortunately, is outside the scope of this particular workshop.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION: Attendees will gain a working knowledge of what makes good and bad digital video delivered over the Internet. There should be no reason for guessing at what streams well. Those with experiences in making digital video for the web should come prepared to share and compare their methods, tools, successes and failures.
