PRE-WORKSHOP
Techniques for Incorporation of GSM's Integrated Medical Curriculum into Multimedia Course Delivery
Don R. Hilbelink and Tim Garren, Gold Standard Multimedia and University of South Florida , Tampa, FL, USA
Lecture/Demo. No prerequisites. Appropriate for novices as well as expert developers.
ABSTRACT:
The Integrated Medical Curriculum (IMC) suite of medical school courseware, developed by Gold Standard Multimedia (GSM), is used by faculty around the world as a valuable resource in medical teaching programs. All of the IMC content is currently being converted to an XML format that now permits significantly greater versatility for use of the data. The workshop will focus on how IMC content ranging from individual illustrations or animations to complete units or chapters can be individually tailored to fit in a personalized, web-based, medical curriculum.
The authors will demonstrate new content and advanced functionality that has recently been added to the IMC, and identify methods for establishing specific navigation paths through the content. Participants will also be instructed in techniques they can use to extract portions of the content for incorporation into a wide range of teaching techniques and platforms, including PowerPoint and Blackboard. These content extraction techniques may then be applied to other web-based materials, in addition to the IMC.
Integrated Medical Curriculum titles available for integration into your courses include:
Clinical Human Embryology -- Study human systems development from conception to birth
Clinical Musculoskeletal Pathology -- Study the definitive work in bone and muscle diseases
Cross-Sectional Anatomy -- Explore labeled cross-sections from the Visible Human Male
Dental Head and Neck Anatomy -- Learn about key anatomy in the head, neck and teeth
The Doctor's Dilemma -- Challenge your students with ethical questions in medicine
Essentials of Human Physiology -- Animate complicated physiologic processes
Essentials of Immunology -- Demonstrate how host defenses operate
HemoSurf -- Study blood and bone marrow with an interactive hematology atlas
Human Anatomy -- Dissect cadavers online, head-to-toe and skin-to-bones
Microscopic Anatomy -- View histologic slides through a digital microscope
Radiologic Anatomy -- Show students human anatomy through virtual radiographs
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Dont reinvent the wheel; learn how to create your own custom courseware quickly and effectively by incorporating the IMC (and other web-based materials). Enhance your teaching and student learning while meeting the high demand for dynamic animations, streaming audio and video, colorful photos and illustrations, and interactive testing. Because material from IMC can be easily integrated into your current curriculum, you will save time and money versus having to develop your own multimedia. *ALL WORKSHOP ATTENDEES WILL RECEIVE COMPLETE ONLINE ACCESS TO IMC FREE FOR 30 DAYS.
