PRE-WORKSHOP
If You Make It, Will They Come? An Instructional Design approach for Medical Education Software.
Anju Relan and Veronica Michaelsen, UCLA and the University of Virginia Schools of Medicine
Lecture/Demo. Full Day. No prerequisites. All Welcome.
ABSTRACT:
It has been the contention of software developers, faculty, and medical educators that much of the excellent software created for medical education remains unused. Implementation of newly created software is thus of great concern among this audience. This workshop presents an analysis of the causes of this phenomenon, and proposes effective instructional design solutions to improve usability and implementation. The audience will be exposed to the basic process involved in the Systems approach to instructional design, emphasizing a strong requirement for a needs analysis as the starting point of all software development. The objectives of the workshop are to acquaint participants with a theoretical approach to Instructional Design, including topics as Needs Assessment, Task Analysis, Formative, and Summative Evaluations. Strategies for accomplishing each of these steps will be provided. Participants will be able to perform an assessment of the academic and cultural environment they work in, and conceptualize novel approaches to software development based on the content presented in the workshop. The format used will be a mix of interactive expository instruction, small group assignments, interactive discussions, and written feedback.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
1) Participants will become acquainted with a theoretical approach to Instructional Design, including topics as Needs Assessment, Task Analysis, Formative, and Summative Evaluations.
2) Participants will discover strategies for accomplishing each of these steps.
3) Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to make informed decisions about successful implementation of a particular tool being contemplated for development, based on a strong instructional design approach.
