CASEPORT: Synergy through Integration of Case-based Learning Systems
M. R. Fischer and

ABSTRACT:
Cooperative strategies for efficient and effective use of e-learning in medicine play an important role in times of scarce resources. CASEPORT is a web-portal for case-based learning systems. It was developed under a German national initiative for new media in higher education. CASEPORT makes medical case collections from different learning systems available to teachers and learners with a single-sign on mechanism. By unifying content from various sources a critical mass for the integration of online case-based courses is provided.
Twelve German medical faculties have contributed to the content with a focus on internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, pediatrics, and surgery. Integrated courses in all of these subject areas have been evaluated in pilot settings. Metadata on cases and user-sessions are communicated to the CASEPORT server from the distributed learning systems through a standard protocol (SOAP-interface). A common XML scheme has been developed for the exchange of cases between systems in cooperation with other national consortia (MedicMed, Prometheus), thus generating a potential standard. Recently, new legislation for an integrated and more interdisciplinary undergraduate medical education in Germany was passed. This legal framework provides the basis for a broader use of e-learning. The presentation will illustrate the potential of a multi-institutional and multi-system approach for a successful and efficient e-learning integration. Germany is used as an example that can be expanded internationally.
BENEFIT TO
PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
CASEPORT is an innovative approach to the challenge of system integration. Attendees will benefit from the presentation of the concepts behind CASEPORT and the steps from technical to curricular integration. Although CASEPORT is a German effort until today, the presentation will promote an international collaboration as a next step.
