PBL as the Foundation of an Internet-Based Learning and Training

ABSTRACT:
The Faculty of Medicine at the private University of Witten/Herdecke has more than ten year's of experience with PBL in its curriculum. Within this educational construct, students learn to integrate by working in an interdisciplinary manner on different medical subjects using paper-patient cases.
MedicMED (Multimedia Education - Internet Campus Medicine) is a research project at the University of Witten/Herdecke, sponsored by the German Ministry for Education. It utilizes the experience of "self directed learning" at Witten/Herdecke. The main focus of MedicMED is the development and implementation of an Internet based learning and training system for students in medicine. Within this system students will be supported by PBL- cases that are enriched with multimedia elements. Case- simulations supplement the existing offerings.
The uniqueness of MedicMED lies in the complete integration of this internet-based multimedia learning system into the existing curriculum. We present the educational concept of MedicMED and describe its incorporation of content for the "objective structured clinical examinations" (OSCE). Computer-based examination settings will be illustrated. Examination results as well as accompanying evaluation and acceptance will be presented.
