ABSTRACT:
The objective of Sounds and Murmurs of the Heart (Virtual Stethoscope Project), was to further the goals of teaching the art of cardiac auscultation to medical students, doctors in training and physicians who need a quick review. Using new digital recording and post-processing methods to achieve the highest sound quality. Heart sounds and murmurs were recorded digitally in normal subjects, as well as patients with valvular heart diseases. A unique auscultation map user interface was developed to simulate a virtual patient where auscultation of the various auscultation zones can be performed thus allowing the intensity, the pitch and the radiation of the heart sounds and murmurs be recreated faithfully. The final stage involved complete development and production of the Enhanced CD along with the plan for Internet delivery. Various professional digital music processing software was used in post-production. FileMaker Pro was used to create the database of heart sounds and murmurs and the final user-interface.
BENEFIT TO
PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
The demo will include a demonstration of the software user-interface and the quality of the heart sounds and murmurs recorded. It will also include a discussion of the challenges involved in heart sounds recording and post-processing.
