ABSTRACT:

The use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA’s) has become almost ubiquitous in health education centers and the health profession, yet many student and faculty users are unfamiliar with both the available software features of the PDA as well as how to correctly use professional medical programs installed on these PDA devices.  The Palm Operating System Emulator (POSE) is software that emulates the various models of palm powered devices (creates a full featured virtual Palm device) that can be used to convert your laptop or desktop to the Palm operating system. Skins of any Palm device can be added to mimic the specific models that the audience owns. This software is useful for demonstrating, writing, debugging, or testing PDA software. This enables you either to develop Palm operating system software or to install commercially available PDA software to your laptop or desktop. By loading the software to your laptop, you can digitally project full screen your virtual PDA to an overhead screen where all students in the audience can view the steps and features you are instructing or illustrating. As instructor you can teach, compare, and illustrate to your class or audience the features of the various professional software running on the Palm operating system. Furthermore multiple devices can be run side-by-side on the digitally projected screen. Participants will have an opportunity to use the device and will quickly recognize many applications in medical instruction.

Examples in using POSE for instruction can be found at http://www.uams.edu/classinformatics/pda/PDAanim.html and the software and definitions can be found at http://www.palm.com/developers

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The POSE software installed on your digitally projected laptop or PC can be used to either instruct students on how to use the various features of Palm Operating system PDA or be used to digitally project PDA installed programs to your audience. This ability to project in a large screen format can reduce your technical questions and speed acceptance of PDA’s or PDA based programs by students of any PDA program. Two or three PDA’s can be running side by side simultaneously on your projected laptop demonstrating to your students the differences and nuances of the different available professional programs. Further the POSE can be used to promote your PDA developed software product to students, colleagues, customers or the public. By using the POSE software you can improve your teaching and the students’ learning efficiency.
