ABSTRACT:
The residency years are a time when cognitive learning is most effective if it is tied directly to daily experience in the clinic or on the wards. Typically, didactic sessions are utilized to meet this need for sub-specialty knowledge. However, in most residency programs, the possibility of comprehensively covering these required cognitive objectives via didactics is difficult due to 1) the diversity of simultaneous assignments/rotation and 2) the service needs of the residency disrupting resident attendance.
In order to provide support for educational needs of the residents by utilizing daily learning objectives and archived resources for the resident's current rotation, an eLearning multi-media system has been authored which incorporates the principles of androgogy (adult learning) in its design. This curriculum is titled Resident Online Curriculum (ROC) and can be accessed at http://www.ucsfresno.edu/intranet/obgyn/index.html.
The asynchronous design of the ROC curriculum allows for access 24 hours a day giving the learner the ability to set a personal learning schedule. The objectives are not prescriptive and are designed as guidelines for breaking down the material into daily portions, which allows for individualized learning. The knowledge is directly tied to the current rotation to enhance learning and meet the need of the "just in time" aspect of physician life. The learning style is self-directed, allowing the learner flexibility to choose the method that suits him/her best. The ROC also provides the opportunity for the supervisor to monitor acquisition of intended cognitive knowledge.
Components of the ROC:
¨
¨ Daily objectives tied directly to current rotation
¨ Archived resources
¨ Tools for searching the internet
¨ Modules on Self-Directed Learning and Resident Teaching Skills Improvement
¨ Rotation specific Goals and Objectives
¨ Asynchronous delivery
¨ Opportunities for resident contribution
¨ Multimedia (PowerPoint, video, immediate feedback quizzes)
¨ Evaluation of achievement
BENEFIT TO
PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
The concept of eCurriculum has often been limited to the weekly meeting style of university and medical school courses. Exploring the ROC will expose medical educators and curriculum developers to alternate instructional schedules and the unique opportunities they provide for design flexibility, increased learner control, and integration of multimedia components.
