PRE-WORKSHOP

Cinema 4D: Using Cinema 4D and other 3D programs to create own 3D objects and projects.  General introduction to 3D

P. Engels, R. Driever, H.O. Vetter, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Witten/Herdecke, Wuppertal/Germany ABSTRACT:

Computer simulations, like 3D Animations, have gained increasing importance in all parts of science.  3D Animations are used for advertising, merchandising of scientific and medical products as well as for education and explanations of complex procedures.  Our aim is to give a general introduction to this modern technology and to demonstrate how easy it can be used for your own educational projects.  Among the 3D programs Cinema 4D is a well-known "state of the art 3D program".  At the beginning of 2003 a new version of cinema 4D, version 8.0, was released.

Workshop Outline:

A general introduction to the main topics of 3D animations:

¨       Psychological background and knowledge of 3D viewing

¨       Basic principles of 3D and mathematical background

¨       Creating a 3D project: Storyboarding and stressing of important points

¨       Demonstration of examples: Step by step how to do

¨       Texturing: Creating realistic objects with photo textures

¨       Animation: How to animate an object.

Demonstration:

Using free, legally download versions of 3D programs, especially cinema 4D (http://www.maxon.net) we will demonstrate the main principles for creating and animating 3D objects in an effective manner.  The generated animations can be used for multiple purposes via the Internet or can be reused in other educational programs.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The participants will get a short general introduction to 3D computer programs and how they can be used for a variety of purposes.  The participants will be able to see if they could/should use 3D programs for their own applications and presentations.  Cinema 4D is one 3D program that we will focus on and demonstrate.  The presenters have no financial relationship with the software vendor.  The participants get an handout with further tutorials, downloads, web links and summaries of the main points.
