ABSTRACT:
At
Drexel University College of Medicine, we're fortunate to have a 10 exam room
state-of-the-art clinical education and assessment center, where we administer
of a variety of programs using single, as well as multistation standardized
patient activities. We make full
use of technology to enhance these programs. Standardized patients input performance
data into desktop computers as soon as learners exit their exam rooms. OSCAR, a software package developed
in-house, manages all these data, which are easily downloadable into statistical
packages such as Excel and SPSS. We
are able to generate an 11-page personalized report for each participant
immediately following each program.
In addition, we developed WebOSCE, a system that connects distance
learners to computers in our facility and enables them to simultaneously
participate in multistation assessments with their peers, who are taking the
exam in our facility. In this
workshop, we will discuss the issues involved in putting all on standardized
patient teaching and assessment programs and the use of technology,
demonstrating our various systems.
Participants will have the opportunity to interact with standardized
patients in our facility, and can try their hands at the WebOSCE
technology. Additionally, we will
demonstrate our Web-based learning program, MedEthEx, witch allows learners to
enter questions and comments in free text in this on-line program, and receive
audio and videotaped replies from "patients, " who portray scenarios dealing
with four difficult ethical dilemmas.
MedEthEx offers feedback on the learner’s use of communication skills and
ability to address ethical issues.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING
SESSION:
Workshop
attendees will...
·
Learn
how our clinical skills assessment scoring system enables standardized patients
to input data which is computed for immediate performance reports across single
or multi-station activities.
·
See a
demonstration of and learn how distant learners can be connected to SP teaching
and assessment activities in our Philadelphia facility.
·
Go on
line to our MedEthEx Website to interact with a program that teaches, evaluates,
and provides learners with feedback concerning medical ethics dilemmas. This workshop will not be on the main
Drexel Campus. Transportation will
be provided from the Sheraton University City Hotel.
